Course Objective

Course Objective:

This course is designed to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and competently operate a mobile crane on construction sites, following CPCS guidelines. Delegates will develop a clear understanding of industry standards, safe lifting practices, machine operation, and legal responsibilities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a mobile crane operator
  • Identify and explain principal components, basic construction, controls, and terminology
  • Follow manufacturer’s requirements and relevant regulations
  • Understand all relevant documentation
  • Carry out pre-use checks
  • Configure and set the crane for site and highway travel
  • Travel the crane safely to an area of work
  • Manoeuvre the crane in confined spaces
  • Configure the crane for lifting duties
  • Deploy outriggers to specification (where applicable)
  • Identify and respond to hazards, including underground and overhead services
  • Programme and set up Rated Capacity Indicators (RCIs)
  • Accurately place loads
  • Change falls of rope on a hook block
  • Minimise load swing
  • Move loads through machine travel (where applicable)
  • Maintain safe working conditions
  • Comply with signals and instructions
  • Explain rigging and de-rigging when fitting fly jibs or boom extensions
  • Dismantle the crane for movement
  • Carry out shutdown and securing procedures

Assessment

  • CPCS Theory Test (verbal - 30 minutes)
  • CPCS Practical Test (duration varies per endorsement, typically around 2.5 hours)

Entry Requirement

  • Candidates must have passed the CITB HS&E test within the last 2 years before their CPCS test date.
  • CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller qualification is required for the 6-day version
  • A solid understanding of slinging techniques and signals is essential.
  • A Group C (LGV Class 2) licence is required if driving the crane on public highways. This is not required for on-site work
  • A good understanding of spoken and written English is essential.
  • Delegates must provide their own PPE for training and testing.

Certification

Successful candidates will obtain a CPCS ‘Construction Plant Competence Scheme’ card on completion, if they don’t currently hold a relevant NVQ they’ll be issued with a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (2 year validity). During the 2 year lifespan of the card candidates will need to work towards the relevant plant operations NVQ that will enable them to upgrade their Blue Competent Operator card (5 year validity).

CITB Levy Registered?

For those registered with CITB, KH Plant Training facilitates automatic CITB grant claims on completion. The application is submitted on behalf of the learner
