Course Objective

The objective of this vocational competence qualification is to provide recognition that a candidate has demonstrated the required level of technical competence to work on engineering construction structures, plant, and equipment in one of two disciplines – either Erecting or Rigging.

Learning Outcomes

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that they can:

  • Apply national and industry health, safety, and environmental standards to work practices while following established risk assessments, method statements, and permit to work systems.
  • Interpret technical drawings, method statements, lift plans, risk assessments, and work schedules, and safely prepare and reinstate the work area, materials, and equipment
  • Assess the technical and resource requirements needed to carry out engineering activities safely and effectively to specification.
  • Execute safe and effective load preparation for moving, lifting, and positioning—ensuring proper balance by accounting for the centre of gravity.
  • Carry out the movement of loads in a manner that maintains safety and effectiveness throughout the process.
  • Position, install, and secure construction elements in compliance with prescribed requirements and procedures.
  • Perform the dismantling of construction elements or assemblies safely and effectively according to established procedures.
  • Conduct sequential checks using correct methods and report their completion in line with organisational procedures..
  • Manage complex load movements by selecting and positioning specialist lifting accessories, ensuring loads are secure before moving, and releasing them safely and effectively at their designated destination.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed against the learning outcomes through a combination of methods:

  • Online Knowledge Tests: Invigilated multiple-choice and short-answer tests set by the ECITB Awarding Organisation.
  • Observed Skills Assessments: Practical assessments conducted either in an actual workplace or under approved simulated conditions to verify the application of knowledge, skills, and behaviours.
  • Portfolio of Evidence: Documentation collated by the Approved Centre demonstrating candidate achievement across the qualification.
  • Final Technical Discussion: A recorded technical discussion with an ECITB AO assessor to confirm that all learning outcomes have been met.

Entry Requirement

There are no mandatory entry requirements. However, due to the level and complexity of the subject, it is recommended that candidates should have attained GCSE grade “C/5” or above or RQF Functional Skills Level 2 or above in English (Language) and Mathematics or are able to demonstrate evidence of other suitable attainment or experience.

Certification

Successful candidates, having met the learning outcomes across all nine mandatory units, are awarded the ECITB Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction Lifting, Positioning and Installing Structures, Plant and Equipment in the chosen discipline pathway (Erecting or Rigging).

Summary

This Level 3 Diploma is built on National Occupational Standards and has been developed in consultation with industry employers and stakeholders to improve the transferability of skills. With a Total Qualification Time of 1,906 hours – typically delivered over 36 months – the course covers both the underpinning and discipline-specific requirements. Candidates are assessed via online tests, observed real or simulated workplace activities, a comprehensive portfolio, and a concluding technical discussion with an AO-approved assessor. This qualification is designed for professionals in the Engineering Construction field, equipping them with the expertise to assume progressively responsible roles in either Erecting or Rigging.
