Course Objective

Course Objective:

The objective of this course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and competently operate a Mobile Crane in line with NPORS guidelines. Operators will learn how to prepare, configure, and operate the crane in a wide range of lifting scenarios while maintaining full compliance with legislation, safe working practices, and site protocols.

N101 Course Specification

The NPORS National Plant Operators Registration Scheme is one of the UK’s leading CSCS-affiliated carding schemes and is widely recognised across the Construction, Industrial, Utilities, Warehousing, Port and Marine sectors.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the lifting industry, associated hazards, and operator responsibilities.
Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation and site safety requirements (e.g., HSWA 1974, PUWER, LOLER, Working at Height, BS 7121, method statements, risk assessments).
Use the manufacturer’s handbook, duty charts, lift plans and lifting requirements.
Identify major crane components and explain their functions (booms, outriggers, hydraulic systems, counterweights, hoisting gear, RCI/LMI systems, etc.).
Identify and understand key machine controls and safety systems.
Set up exclusion zones and identify overhead and underground hazards.
Identify and maintain appropriate PPE for crane operations.
Carry out pre-operational and running checks in line with manufacturer and legal requirements.
Prepare the crane for use, including rigging, levelling, programming RCI/LMI, and setting jibs/booms.
Safely operate the crane, including lifting, slewing, travelling, working in confined areas, using signalling systems, and controlling load swing.
Understand environmental considerations such as noise, dust, ground conditions, contamination, and site housekeeping.
Carry out all end-of-work, shutdown, and machine security procedures.

Assessment

Entry Requirement

A good understanding of spoken and written English.
All candidates must provide their own appropriate PPE for training and testing
An accredited Slinger/Signaller qualification is required for the 6-day version
A solid understanding of slinging techniques and signals is essential.
A Group C (LGV Class 2) licence is required if driving the crane on public highways. This is not required for on-site work.

Certification

Upon booking the course you can request NPORS CSCS route, or NPORS for the NPORS Traditional route.*

Successful candidates will obtain an NPORS ‘National Plant Operators Registration Scheme’ card on completion. Those requiring the CSCS-embossed Red Trained Operator card (2 year validity) will need to have a valid CITB HS&E test; during this 2 year period candidates will need to achieve the relevant plant operations NVQ that will enable them to upgrade their Blue Competent Operator card (5 year validity).

Alternatively, candidates not holding a valid CITB HS&E test will only be eligible to receive the traditional 3 year NPORS operator card (5 Year NPORS Card available on request only), however this doesn’t carry the CSCS logo and isn’t as widely recognised.

CITB Levy Registered?

For those registered with CITB, KH Plant Training facilitates automatic CITB grant claims on completion. The application is submitted on behalf of the learner

Summary

This course offers extensive practical training supported by essential theory, ensuring all delegates can operate a Mobile Crane safely, confidently, and in line with NPORS assessment standards. Training is delivered by experienced instructors who provide clear guidance on all aspects of crane operation, from hazard awareness and documentation through to complex lifting procedures. All delegates on a Novice N101 course will also receive KH Plant Training’s NPORS Study Guide to support learning in advance of the training.
